Use this canine whelping calculator to estimate a planning date and expected whelping window from a recorded mating date or a veterinarian-identified LH surge. The result is an estimate for breeder record keeping—not a diagnosis or a guaranteed delivery date.

Estimate a canine whelping date
Choose the reference date you actually recorded. The calculator changes the estimate and uncertainty window to match that reference.
This calculator provides an estimate, not a diagnosis or a guaranteed whelping date. Breeding dates do not always identify the exact date of conception or ovulation. Your veterinarian’s assessment takes priority, and concerns about pregnancy or whelping should be discussed with a veterinarian.
How the canine whelping calculator works
The calculator uses calendar dates rather than clock times, so timezone and daylight-saving changes do not move an estimate by one day. Its rules depend on the reference event:
- Recorded mating date: a 63-day planning reference is shown together with a broader 58–72-day window reported from first accepted breeding.
- Veterinarian-identified LH surge: the central estimate is day 65, with a 64–66-day window.
If you enter a first and last mating date, the tool expands both the planning reference and the broader window. It does not choose one mating as the conception date.
Why mating date is only an estimate
Mating, ovulation and fertilisation are separate events. A bitch may accept mating before ovulation, recently ovulated oocytes still need time to mature, and sperm can remain viable in the reproductive tract for several days. For that reason, the interval from mating to whelping is much more variable than the interval measured from a properly identified endocrine event.
The Merck Veterinary Manual gives a normal range of approximately 58–72 days from the first accepted breeding. That range is useful for planning, but it is too wide to support a guaranteed date. A calculation from mating should therefore be treated as a calendar aid, not proof that a pregnancy is on schedule.
Mating date vs an LH surge date
The preovulatory LH surge is a more precise biological reference point. Veterinary sources describe whelping at approximately 64–66 days after the surge. However, the LH surge cannot be identified reliably from behaviour or a mating date. Direct LH testing is time-sensitive, and progesterone results are interpreted as a series rather than as one universal standalone value.
For that reason, use the LH mode only when a veterinarian or reproduction specialist identified that date. The calculator deliberately does not ask you to interpret hormone values and does not provide progesterone thresholds.
Understanding the expected whelping window
The window is a period for preparation and closer record keeping—not a prediction that labour will begin at either boundary. Confirming pregnancy, assessing fetal development and interpreting whether a pregnancy is progressing normally require veterinary examination.
Multiple mating dates widen the uncertainty because any one of the recorded matings may have occurred before or after ovulation. The tool therefore uses the earliest entered mating for the start of the broad window and the latest entered mating for its end.
What this calculator cannot tell you
- whether the bitch is pregnant;
- the number, health or maturity of puppies;
- whether labour has started or is progressing normally;
- whether veterinary intervention is needed;
- a guaranteed date for planned veterinary procedures.
If you are worried about the bitch, the pregnancy or whelping, contact your veterinarian. Do not delay professional advice because the current date still falls inside a calculated range.
What breeders should record
Clear records make later veterinary discussions and litter communication easier. Record each mating or insemination date separately, the semen type where relevant, the dates and type of reproductive testing, the date pregnancy was confirmed, veterinary appointments and the final whelping date. Keep the original laboratory or veterinary wording rather than replacing it with your own interpretation.
Once a litter is confirmed, structured records also help you prepare an accurate planned litter announcement. Health information, pedigrees and expected dates should be presented clearly without implying guarantees.
Preparing for the expected window
Use the calculated range as a prompt to organise the practical parts of breeder planning. Confirm how to reach your regular veterinarian and the relevant out-of-hours service, prepare the whelping area in good time, keep records and supplies together, and follow the individual veterinary plan for the bitch.
The tool is not a complete pregnancy-care or emergency guide. For broader planning, review your veterinarian’s instructions and keep health-testing information organised. The BodArtDogs guide to health testing for breeding dogs explains how to communicate test results clearly, while the puppy pack guide can help you plan the records that will later accompany each puppy.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are dogs pregnant?
Canine gestation is often described as about 63 days from ovulation. When counted from mating, the interval can be considerably wider because mating may not coincide with ovulation or conception.
Which mating date should I enter?
Enter the first or only recorded mating date. If there were multiple matings, add the final recorded date as well. The calculator will widen the result rather than guessing which mating resulted in conception.
Can I use an ovulation date?
This version intentionally uses a mating-date mode and an LH-surge mode. “Ovulation date” may be estimated through different clinical methods, so the tool avoids treating every owner-entered ovulation date as equally precise.
Does the result confirm a healthy pregnancy?
No. It only adds validated calendar intervals to a date. Pregnancy confirmation, fetal assessment and medical advice must come from a veterinarian.
